Agnes Martin. With My Back to the World. (1997) painting can be found here

When I first looked at this painting mentioned in John Green’s podcast The Anthropocene Reviewed, I was really confused, and didn’t quite understand how Green was able to rally up his emotions from looking at a painting like this.

However, with looking at this painting in closer detail, I was able to sense a feeling of tranquility behind it. I saw this painting as two roads parallel to one another. Martin is essentially carving her own path in life here, utizing her usage of lines to clearly show this. She paints a pastel yellow and orange to contrast with the teal blue strips, and they allow her to add a pop of color without overwhelming the eye. Her use of pastels reflect how turning your back to the world should be: noticeable in the sense that an individual is establishing themselves in their life, but subtle in a sense that change is quite normal throughout an individual’s life.
